Jude Bellingham spared England’s blushes and denied Belgium their first win over England on British soil with a last-minute equaliser to draw 2-2 on Tuesday.

Gareth Southgate’s side were heading for back-to-back losses after defeat to Brazil on Saturday, but goals from Ivan Toney and Bellingham were enough to salvage a draw.

The Three Lions suffered a double blow at the beginning of the first half when John Stones was forced off with injury after nine minutes, before Youri Tielemans quickly gave the visitors the lead following Jordan Pickford’s error.

England were only behind for a matter of minutes, as Toney drew a foul in the box out of Jan Vertonghen before he coolly dispatched the spot kick himself for his first England goal.

Belgium restored their lead when Tielemans headed in at the back post for his second following another England error, this time from Lewis Dunk, who lost possession in a battle with Romelu Lukaku before the latter’s sweet cross was met by the Aston Villa midfielder.

England threatened Belgium several times in the second half and finally found the target when Bellingham’s cool effort rippled the net in the final minute of added time to salvage a well-earned draw.

Talking Point – Two games without victory for England

It could have been worse, but it is still two games against top opposition that England have failed to win, at home, in a matter of days. Bellingham might have saved them on Tuesday, but it is a slight concern heading into a gargantuan summer for Gareth Southgate.

On a more positive note, England battled with both Brazil and the undefeated Belgium with a hugely depleted squad and were without up to 15 players that made the last squad. Context around that has to be taken into consideration, especially as there were three players making their full debut against Belgium.

And it was a much-improved performance from three days ago. Despite two big errors, England were the better side throughout and probably deserved more than they got in front of goal.

Player of the Match – Youri Tielemans (Belgium)

Two goals for the Aston Villa midfielder put his nation within seconds of a historic win. He was not on the pitch when England eventually salvaged their equaliser, but was brilliant when he was on the pitch and looked back to his best.

He took both goals superbly, too. As Pickford rushed back to his line after making an error, Tielemans timed his shot expertly to send the ball back towards the goalkeeper’s side, knowing he’d over-committed to cover the larger gap at the opposite post.

His second was a simple header, but he had kick-started the move with a ball over the top for Lukaku to challenge Dunk. A brilliant all-round showing from the Belgian.

Match Highlights

9’ – BAD NEWS FOR ENGLAND – John Stones has gone down… and it looks like he’ll be coming off. He had the ball at his feet and as he looked to make a pass, seemed to wobble. It’s not clear what he has done there, but he is able to walk off the pitch and straight down the tunnel. Southgate’s growing injury list continues.

11’ – GOAL!! – ENGLAND 0-1 BELGIUM (TIELEMANS): It gets worse for England as Belgium take the lead! Jordon Pickford plays a pass straight to Andre Onana in midfielder, who lays the ball off for Youri Tielemans to delicately strike past the England goalkeeper who is trying to rush

15’ – ENGLAND PENALTY! What a response! Bellingham plays a lovely ball in behind the defence for Toney to run on to, who is hauled down by Jan Vertonghen. Toney will take the spot kick and what a chance this is for his first England goal!

17’ – GOAL!!! – ENGLAND 1-1 BELGIUM (TONEY): Toney buries it! He sends Sels the wrong way, planting his effort into the bottom left corner for his first England goal – a year to the day since his debut!

27’ – GOAL… OR IS IT? Bowen heads in from the corner but VAR are having a look. It seems the West Ham forward was caught out as Belgium stepped out with some zonal marking. No goal, confirmed by VAR.

36’ – GOAL!!! – ENGLAND 1-2 BELGIUM (TIELEMANS): Out of nothing, Belgium are back in front and it’s Tielemans again! Leandro Trossard does really well to wriggle out of the England box and set Belgium forward. A long ball over the top drops to Lewis Dunk, who is charged down by Romelu Lukaku as he tries to poke the ball clear but is dispossessed, leaving the forward to break into the box and curl a beauty of a cross to the back post with the outside of his boot for Tielemans to head home at the back post. A very well-worked goal in the end, but that is two big errors from England and two goals for Belgium…

52’ – TONEY GOES CLOSE! England’s best chance for a while. Toney lets the ball roll across his body before taking a shot at the front post, which is well saved by Sels.

58’ – CHANCE GOES BEGGING FOR BELGIUM! Arthur Theate bolts down the left and squares a cross right through the six-yard box, but it’s two or three feet out of Lukaku’s path and the ball goes all the way through! What a chance for a third.

66’ – MAINOO DENIED! What a moment that would have been! Foden bursts through the midfield before being tackled in the box. England recycle the ball and find Mainoo at the back post, whose drilled effort is well saved by the legs of Sels.

79’ – HUGE CHANCE FOR ENGLAND! Bowen does excellently to receive the ball from James Maddison, skip past his defender and lay the ball off to Foden on the left, who pulls his effort wide. He didn’t catch it cleanly at all!

90’+2 – BIG CHANCE BELGIUM! Doku bursts forward brilliantly and finds Lukebakio in the box, but he skies his effort! He was one-on-one with Pickford, he just gets it all wrong.

90’+4 – GOAL!!! – ENGLAND 2-2 BELGIUM (BELLINGHAM): Who else, but Jude Bellingham to spare England’s blushes!! Maddison flicks the ball into the middle from the byline, where Bellingham brings the ball down and cooly slots into the bottom right corner.
