What should have been a picturesque moment devolved into chaos when a deer wandering through a Long Island backyard got its antlers stuck in a hammock — and video shows the flailing woodland creature’s dramatic rescue.
Frank Floridia, president of the nonprofit Strong Island Animal Rescue League, sprang into action when the distressed homeowner called Friday looking for help.
The animal expert, donning an antler-proof vest, expertly uses scissors to carefully cut the netting, as the deer slowly begins to settle down, video of the rescue shows.
It’s not long before Bambi is finally freed — and high tails it away from the Lake Grove home, the video shows.
This month alone, Floridia has rescued five Long Island deer from makeshift traps, and urged homeowners to take down outside equipment when they’re not using it to avoid such catastrophes.
“Homeowners should take caution that due to all the construction going on that deer are more frequently ending up in backyards,” he said.
“Hammocks and athletic equipment such as volleyball, soccer and lacrosse nets are a great danger to bucks and male deer that will most likely get their antlers tangled in them.”
Although he’s licensed and trained in animal rescue, it’s still a precarious situation to save a trapped deer, he said.
“The rescues are extremely dangerous to both the deer and the rescuer as the deer can get stressed and have a heart attack and the rescuer can get trampled and or impaled by the antlers.”
