In New York City, a good blow dryer has to do more than simply turn wet hair dry.

Bathroom counter space is precious, mornings are rushed, and humidity can undo a polished style before you’ve even left the house. For New Yorkers navigating packed subways, Citi Bikes, long bus rides and unpredictable weather, a reliable hair tool helps keep your style intact on the go.

That made NYC the perfect backdrop for testing the best blow dryers and air stylers for New York Post’s Made It Here Awards. After more than five years of testing hundreds of beauty products for the Post, I know what separates a genuinely useful hair tool from one that simply has an impressive feature list.

See our full testing criteria

Our testing team put five standout hair dryers and air stylers through their paces, with testers bringing different hair types, textures and styling needs to the process. We evaluated how easy each tool was to use, how effectively it dried and styled hair, the finish it delivered, which innovations felt genuinely useful and whether its performance justified the price.

The result was a top three that stood out for very different reasons. Together, these picks proved they could handle the demands of a real-world New York routine — from humidity and hectic mornings to long commutes and everything in between.

Read on for the blow dryers and air stylers we’d trust in the Big Apple (and anywhere else).

Tamara Beckwith/ New York Post

Pros:

  • Combines drying and styling
  • Wet and Dry modes
  • Heated ceramic plates plus airflow
  • Tapered design helps reach roots
  • 72-inch cord
  • No app required

Cons:

  • Fewer styling options than a full multi-styler
  • No travel case
  • Not dual voltage

The Glossi combines airflow and heated ceramic plates in a single tool, taking damp hair and creating a polished blowout in mere minutes.

“For me, Shark was the clear winner — my hair rarely ever holds its shape after blow-drying,” Miska Salemann, commerce reporter and blow-dryer tester, shared. “But the Shark proved to be powerful, and the slightly more compact design made styling feel much easier and more intuitive. The heat settings were spot-on, and somehow my hair felt smoother and looked shinier after a morning blow-drying session.”

Its teardrop-shaped head is designed to get closer to the roots, while Wet Mode handles the initial drying. Its Dry Mode can be used to refresh already-dry hair. Shark also says the device measures temperature 1,000 times per second to regulate heat, keeping your hair from getting fried in the styling process. It’s the ideal tool for the person who wants a professional-grade blowout without additional styling tools.

Power: 1,300W | Attachments: Integrated styling head; no separate attachments | Cord length: 72 inches | Weight: 1.63 pounds | Cool shot: No dedicated button | Ion technology: Yes* | Travel case: No | App: No | Number of heat/speed settings: 3 heat / 3 speed | Warranty: 2 years

Pros:

  • Infrared light technology
  • Built-in LCD screen
  • App-connected customization
  • Three heat and three airflow settings
  • 130 miles per hour wind speed
  • Cool-shot button
  • RFID-equipped magnetic attachments
  • Lightweight at about 1.7 pounds

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • App features can feel like overkill for a basic blow-dry
  • Not dual voltage in the U.S.
  • No travel case

While its price tag may make it feel like a luxury item, the AirLight Pro is the clear choice when innovation is concerned.

Its headline feature is infrared light, which L’Oréal Professionnel says works alongside air and heat to target water molecules and speed evaporation. The company reports up to 21% faster drying, 55% more hydration locked into hair and 19% less energy consumption in its testing.

The technology doesn’t stop there. The AirLight Pro has a built-in LCD, three heat settings, three airflow settings and a cool-shot function. Its connected app customizes temperature and airflow and accesses presets, including Sleek, Curly and Coily, but it’s optional.

“This is high-tech and high-performance, for sure,” Brooke Parker, commerce partnerships associate and blow-dryer tester, shared. “It dried my hair fast while keeping the heat consistent, leaving it super shiny and surprisingly sweat-proof after my signature ‘I’m going to be late’ walk-run to the train. I love that the attachments automatically adjust the heat and air settings for you, but the body of the dryer definitely felt a little top-heavy after holding it for a while.”

It also feels impressively light for a professional-style dryer. L’Oréal lists the U.S. version at about 1.7 pounds, with a 9-foot consumer cord.

Power: 1,875 W (U.S.) |Attachments: 2 magnetic nozzles; removable/cleanable filter | Cord length: 9 feet | Weight: approx. 1.7pounds | Cool shot: Yes | Ion technology: No — infrared technology instead | Travel case: No | App: Optional | Number of heat/speed settings: 3 heat / 3 airflow settings, plus customizable Pro modes | Warranty: 2 years

A T3 hair dryer with the Made It Here Awards seal.
Tamara Beckwith/ New York Post

Pros:

  • Dual voltage
  • Shorter, more compact handle
  • Lightweight design
  • Includes four styling attachments
  • Three heat and three speed settings
  • Cool shot
  • 9-foot swivel cord
  • Travel tote included
  • 2-year warranty

Cons:

  • Learning curve with some attachments
  • More expensive than a basic travel dryer
  • Not every attachment is necessary for every user
  • Diffuser is sold separately

The new-generation Aire 360 automatically adapts to different voltage systems worldwide, so it can be taken abroad with a plug adapter instead of worrying about whether your U.S. hair tool will work at your destination. T3 also redesigned the device with a shorter handle and lighter base specifically to make it more travel-friendly.

It’s a full air-styling system with two curling attachments, an oval brush and a SoftAire drying concentrator. The ceramic curling barrels use T3’s CeraGloss ceramic, while the oval brush is designed to smooth and lift.

That versatility is what makes it compelling for trips. Rather than packing a dryer, curling iron and brush separately, users can consolidate several steps into one system.

“The T3 is for the fine hair or naturally straight hair baddies,” Michelle Moezam, senior commerce social marketing manager and blow-dryer tester, said. “It’s great for long hair as the long handle can really get the parts of the back of the head that I normally struggle with.”

T3 lists three heat settings, three speed settings, a cool shot and a 9-foot swivel cord. It also includes a storage tote, which is exactly the kind of small but meaningful detail I want from a travel-oriented beauty tool. It’s substantially more compact than the first-generation model. T3 says the new version has the shortest handle and lightest design in its lineup, while TechRadar measured the updated model at about 1.3 pounds.

Power: 1,200–1,400W | Attachments: 2 curling attachments, oval brush, SoftAire drying concentrator, storage tote |Cord length: 9-foot swivel cord | Weight: approx. 1.3 lbs. | Cool shot: Yes | Ion technology: No dedicated ion generator listed | Travel case: Yes, includes storage tote | App: No | Number of heat/speed settings:  3 heat / 3 speed settings | Warranty: 2 years

Dyson Nural Hair Dryer

Pros:

  • Smart heat control helps protect your scalp from excessive heat
  • Five attachments make it versatile for straight, wavy and curly hair
  • Powerful airflow helps speed up drying and styling
  • Magnetic attachments are easy to switch out
  • Sleek, premium design looks great on your vanity

Cons:

  • At $449.99, it’s a major investment
  • It’s heavier than some lightweight hair dryers
  • There are a lot of features and settings to learn
  • Some attachments may be more useful for certain hair types than others
  • Not the best for thicker hair types

The Dyson Supersonic Nural has a sleek Ceramic Pink and Rose Gold design, plus smart technology that adjusts the heat based on how close the dryer is to your scalp. Its Scalp Protect mode helps keep the temperature comfortable, while intelligent heat control helps prevent excessive heat exposure.

The attachments are where this dryer really stands out. It comes with five magnetic attachments designed for different hair types and styling needs, including a diffuser for curls and waves, a styling concentrator for smooth looks, a gentle air attachment, a wide-tooth comb and a flyaway attachment. The dryer can also recognize which attachment you’re using and remember your preferred settings. There’s even a Pause Detect feature that reduces airflow when you put the dryer down. It’s a lot of technology packed into one tool, but that’s the reason it appeals to many shoppers.

We did find drawbacks during testing; mainly that it didn’t work as well on testers with thicker, curlier hair.

“The Dyson offered a solid drying experience, but on my thick, curly hair, it didn’t deliver the same level of shine or volume as the Shark or Laifen,” Georgie Olmeda, commerce partnerships manager, shared after testing. “It was also noticeably heavier than the other dryers, making it less comfortable to maneuver through a longer styling session.”

Power: 1,600W | Attachments: 5 magnetic attachments: Wave+Curl diffuser, styling concentrator, Gentle air attachment, wide-tooth comb and Flyaway attachment | Cord length: 8.6 feet |Weight:  approx. 1.8 pounds. | Cool shot: Yes | Ion technology: Yes, negative ions | Travel case: Not listed | App: No |  Number of heat/speed settings: 4 heat / 3 speed settings | Warranty: 2-year limited

Laifen SE 2 Hair Dryer
Tamara Beckwith/ NY POST

Pros:

  • Extremely lightweight at just 0.8 pounds
  • Powerful 108,000-RPM motor dries hair quickly
  • Negative-ion technology helps reduce frizz and static
  • Magnetic attachments are easy to switch
  • More affordable than many premium blow dryers

Cons:

  • Only comes with two attachments
  • Not dual voltage, so it’s not ideal for international travel
  • No travel case is included
  • Only has a 1-year warranty

If your arm starts feeling like it’s getting a workout halfway through a blowout, meet the Laifen SE 2. At just 0.8 pounds, this dryer is impressively light without giving up power. Its 108,000-RPM motor delivers fast airflow to help dry hair quickly, while its compact design makes it easy to move around your head without the usual arm fatigue.

Its Temperature Cycling Mode automatically adjusts the heat to reduce excessive heat exposure, while a three-LED temperature ring shows the heat level. It also uses negative-ion technology to reduce static and frizz. With 10 drying settings, you can adjust the dryer to suit your hair and styling routine.

Two magnetic attachments are included: a diffuser for curls and waves and a smoothing nozzle for creating a sleeker finish. The diffuser is useful for enhancing natural curls, while the smoothing nozzle helps direct airflow for a smoother look.

“The Laifen had a noticeably powerful airstream, which helped dry my hair fast,” Salemann shared. “This is the brush I would probably use if I were rushing out the door in the morning. I also appreciated the fact that it seemed a bit quieter (or somehow less annoying-sounding) than the other brushes, which made the blow-drying process a little more pleasant.”

Power: 1,400W/120V, not dual voltage, 108,000-RPM brushless motor | Attachments: Magnetic diffuser and smoothing nozzle | Cord length: 8.2 feet | Weight:  0.8 pounds. | App: No  |Number of heat/speed settings: 2 speed levels, 10 drying settings, Hot/warm/cold temperature settings, Temperature Cycling Mode | Negative-ion technology: Yes | Cool shot: Yes | Travel case: Not listed as included | Warranty: 1-year

How we tested

For three months, five members of the New York Post team blow-dried their hair regularly, putting our narrowed-down list of top-performing blow dryers through real-world testing. We rotated the dryers among testers to get a range of hair types, styling habits and experiences, then evaluated each model against the criteria below.

We weren’t just looking for a dryer that could get hair dry quickly. We wanted to know how each one performed over time, how easy it was to use, how well it controlled frizz and, most importantly, whether it could produce a fresh blowout that could survive a day in New York City.

Our testers followed the same testing criteria throughout the three months, including judging heat and airflow performance, ergonomics, attachments, noise, cool-shot effectiveness, maintenance and finish quality. We also put each blowout through morning and evening real-world testing, exposing hair to NYC’s humidity, wind, sweat and rapid indoor-to-outdoor temperature changes.

At the end of testing, we compared notes and results across the team to determine which dryers consistently delivered the strongest performance.  Three models earned the top spots based on their combination of performance, usability and staying power.

Testing Criteria

  • Drying performance and temperature control: We evaluated heat-setting accuracy, airflow strength, temperature consistency over time and cool-shot performance. The winners delivered strong, controlled airflow with accurate, stable heat and an effective cool shot.
  • Styling results and attachments: We assessed smoothness, shine, flyaways, volume, and overall finish, while testing whether concentrators, diffusers and other attachments meaningfully improved styling. The winners produced polished results and had attachments that were effective and easy to use.
  • Ergonomics, noise and everyday usability: We considered weight, balance, grip, button placement, hand fatigue, noise, cord flexibility, portability and storage. The winners were comfortable and maneuverable to use, without excessive noise or cumbersome design.
  • Build quality, safety and maintenance: We inspected construction, materials, controls, connections, safety features and how easily filters and other maintenance points could be cleaned. The winners combined durable construction with useful safety features and straightforward maintenance.
  • Efficiency and practical performance: We considered power consumption in relation to drying performance, looking for dryers that delivered strong results without using excessive energy. The winners translated their power into efficient, effective drying rather than relying on energy use alone.
  • Real-world performance and style longevity: We tested each blowout in real-world NYC conditions, including humidity, wind, sweat, and rapid indoor-to-outdoor temperature changes, looking for frizz, loss of smoothness and changes in volume or definition. The winners maintained a polished, smooth style even after a full day in challenging conditions.

Which is worth it? Final verdict

There isn’t one blow dryer that is perfect for every New Yorker, which is exactly why we gave these three tools different awards.

The Shark Glossi is our Best Overall because it makes the basic blowout easier. Its 2-in-1 design combines airflow and heated ceramic styling, and its Wet and Dry modes mean I can use the same tool to style freshly washed hair or refresh a dry look.

The L’Oréal Professionnel AirLight Pro is our Best Luxury Innovation because it is the most technologically ambitious of the three. Its infrared light technology is designed to accelerate evaporation, while the LCD controls, three heat and airflow settings and optional app give me an unusually customizable drying experience.

And the T3 Aire 360 is our Best for Travel because it solves a problem that most premium hair tools simply don’t: international voltage. Its dual-voltage system is paired with a shorter, lighter body, multiple attachments and a travel tote.

In other words, all three made it here for different reasons — but they all met the criteria I cared about: performance, ease of use, thoughtful technology, versatility and practicality.

For a New Yorker, that’s the real test. A hair tool has to earn its place.

I’m a big fan of blow-dryer brushes (and Shark products), and the Glossi won by a landslide for me. It was extremely easy to use, didn’t leave the ends of my hair crunchy and was versatile on both damp and dry hair.

“The Shark was a standout for its powerful airflow and super fast drying time,” Olmeda shared. “It cut my usual 2.5-hour curl-to-straight routine down to about 75 minutes on my first test and 70 minutes by my third. It left my hair shiny, smooth, and with sealed-looking ends.”

“Instant LOVE and undoubtedly the winner for me,” Parker highlighted. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen my hair shiner or smoother — and it only took about 8 minutes every time. It was simple to use from the second I turned it on, and the glossy finish results held up the entire day.”

“The L’Oréal brush didn’t necessarily exceed my standards, but it still worked well for my relatively thin, straight hair,” Salemann shared. “I appreciated the fact that there were multiple heat settings, and the magnetic attachments made it easy to switch between them.”
