Madelyn Cline was once a major suspect.
Cline, 28, opened up about police mistaking her as the leader of an illegal sex ring when she was filming a movie in Spain. “Speaking of prostitutes — did I tell you the story about how when I was in Spain, I was working, and the police kept showing up to my apartment door?” she asked Jake Shane during a Thursday, August 13, episode of his “Therapuss” podcast. Shane, 26, then asked if they were mistaking her for a sex worker, to which she clarified, “They thought I was the leader.”
When Shane tried to make sense of the situation and asked her how many girls she was living with, Cline replied, “It was just me.”
The Outer Banks star then recalled chatting with Spanish actress Penélope Cruz, who happened to previously live in the same area. (Cline and Cruz, 52, are costarring in the upcoming film Day Drinker, which is slated for a 2027 release.)
“She was asking me how I liked living in Madrid … so, I was telling her ‘I love it so much, but I have to move out of my apartment because the police keep showing up, and I’m really scared, and they keep talking to me in Spanish, and I’m trying to translate, but I don’t know how,’” Cline shared, noting that the police kept taking her passport and information, which put her on edge.
Cruz, 52, then told Cline that it just so happened to be her “first apartment building” and her “old neighbor” had called her and said, “They attract some local crime ring in Salamanca.”
Cline added, “They tracked it back to the building and they were coming to my apartment directly and I found out later that it was some sex ring.”
She continued, “They thought I was the madam of it. They thought that I was their fearless leader.” Cline clarified, “I wasn’t. I was their fearful leader. I was accidentally elected. I wish they would have let me know because I would have been a lot braver about it.”
Elsewhere in the podcast, Shane gushed about his friendship with Cline.
“Sometimes I feel like you and I are two brain cells,” he said. Cline beamed and joked, “We are! Fighting over being the third.”
Shane and Cline have been close pals for years. They met three years ago while waiting for luggage at an airport. In April, they spent time together at Coachella.
