One person was killed after shots were fired at an event attended by around 3,500 people in the Swiss town of Aarau in the early hours of Sunday, Aargau cantonal police said in a post on X.

Police said the person killed was a 22-year-old woman who died at the scene. Another woman and four men, aged between 24 and 27, suffered injuries ranging from minor to serious. All of the victims were from Switzerland, according to police.

However, Italian newspaper “Corriere della Sera” reported that the 22-year-old woman was originally from Atri in Italy’s Abruzzo region. Two of the five people injured are also Italian, according to the newspaper.
Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis reportedly expressed his condolences to his Italian counterpart, Antonio Tajani. Tajani has also sent a task force to Switzerland to support local authorities, according to the report.
The shooting occurred at around 2.30 am during a rave. Witnesses said they initially mistook the gunshots for fireworks. Around ten shots can be heard in a video published by Swiss newspaper “Blick”, which was reportedly recorded near the scene.
There have also been reports of a possible second crime scene. Swiss broadcaster Tele M1 reported that shots were also fired at members of the travelling community. Police have not yet confirmed those reports.
A manhunt for the suspect is ongoing. “Possible motives and the exact circumstances of the incident remain unclear,” cantonal police said. Authorities have not released further information about the suspect or said whether any arrests have been made.
According to Swiss emergency news outlet BRK News, a Swiss military Super Puma helicopter has also been deployed over the wider Aarau area.
Flight data show the aircraft making several movements around the town. It is not yet clear what role the helicopter is playing in the ongoing operation.
German police have also joined the search operation, a spokesperson for Freiburg police headquarters confirmed. No further details about the specific measures have been released.
