Marshals is only two seasons in, but there have already been numerous character deaths.
Before CBS picked up the show centered on Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), the Paramount+ franchise started with Taylor Sheridan‘s hit series Yellowstone, which premiered in 2018. Fans got to know the Duttons — including Kayce and Monica (Kelsey Asbille), who remained at the center of the show until the finale.
The original show came to an end in 2024, later expanding its universe with Marshals and Dutton Ranch. Marshals quickly found success when it premiered on CBS in 2026 — but it also shocked existing fans with the reveal that Monica had died.
Puck reported at the time that Marshals ran into issues when plotting out the new CBS show centered on Kayce’s life after Yellowstone. To avoid making the new series too identical to its flagship, Marshals chose to remove Monica from the narrative and shift the voice of the show to be more of a fast-paced procedural.
According to the newsletter, Paramount allegedly worked with lawyers for months on how to successfully feature other Yellowstone leads Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) in their own Dutton Ranch spinoff without facing potential legal issues over their story being too similar to the OG show.
CBS and Paramount have not publicly addressed the Puck report.
Marshals also built out the world with stars Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, Brett Cullen and Logan Marshall Green. To keep the audience on their toes, Marshals managed to kill off three characters within two seasons.

Monica Dutton
The series premiere revealed that Monica died after being diagnosed with cancer. Her death resulted in Kayce becoming a single father to their son, Tate, while mourning the loss of his wife.
Garrett Garvey
Cal’s and Kayce’s former Navy SEAL teammate — who was played by Riley Green — was involved in a fire in season 1. He initially seemed to be on the mend despite sustaining second-degree burns and inhaling a lot of smoke, but when Kayce, Cal and Andrea (Ash Santos) returned to the hospital at the end of their shift to check on Garrett, they were informed he had died.
Dolly Weaver
Kayce’s love interest Dolly (Ellyn Jameson) was killed after a standoff between him and her dad, Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey).
