Pete Davidson found solace in Eddie Murphy’s comedy in the days after his father died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Davidson, 31, appeared in the Being Eddie documentary, revealing his introduction to Murphy, 64, came from watching his 1983 special, Delirious.
“Immediately, [I heard], ‘F*** this, suck this, f*** you,’ and my mom’s like, ‘Whoa, what did you get?’ I was dying laughing,” Davidson recalled of his mother Amy’s reaction to the expletive special. “She was like, ‘You can’t watch this!’ And I was like, ‘Please, I’m laughing.’”
He continued, “I think she saw I was enjoying myself at a time where I really wasn’t and she was like, ‘You can watch this stuff as long as you don’t repeat it or tell anybody, and it was kind of a little pact we made.’”
Davidson was 7 years old when his dad, Scott, died in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. (Scott is also survived by wife Amy and their daughter, Casey.)
“He was a fireman, [and his team was] actually the first truck there,” Davidson recalled during an appearance on Theo Von’s eponymous podcast in September. “They were the first truck over the bridge to the [towers]. Pretty much the whole house died, which is sad but also at least he died with his pals.”
Davidson’s family memories with Scott, however, are “few and far between” due to his young age.
“He was f***ing hilarious, man,” Davidson recalled. “I just remember laughing a lot, him being pretty jacked and [he] smoked a lot of cigarettes and driving a Subaru Impreza. That’s all I remember [besides that he] always had a big smile on his face.”
At the time, the King of Staten Island star didn’t completely understand why Scott died.
“I was really young, so I didn’t even really know what the f*** happened,” he said. “It hit me later, like, when I was in college. I was like, ‘Oh, I’m pretty angry about this.’ It’ll show up more and more as I get older ‘cause you understand, ‘That’s really sad to happen to a kid.’”
Davidson has also saved several mementos that remind him of his late dad.
“I actually have his wedding ring that I wear all the time,” he said in September. “It’s actually super f***ed-up, but I have his chain [and] his badge. That’s how they found [his body] and I have it. I just keep it in a safe ‘cause with my luck I’ll lose it. I have a couple of those things, and I have his fire jacket and another set of pants [that] I framed.”
Davidson, who costarred with Murphy in The Pickup earlier this year, also noted his “favorite thing” is hearing stories about Scott.
“The second [his friends] start talking, they have this big smile and their eyes kind of light up — and they call him ‘Scotty,’ which is what his friends called him,” Davidson said. “Everything I hear is always really sweet. I’m sure they keep the horrible things away.”
