Belly finally made a decision in The Summer I Turned Pretty series finale — but the story isn’t over yet.

Prime Video announced on Wednesday, September 17, that they greenlit a feature film that will conclude the story. Exact plot details are under wraps but the script will be written by Jenny Han, who wrote the books that inspired the show and created the hit series.

“There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due,” Han said in a statement. “I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans.”

The news comes as a surprise for those who read Han’s novels: The Summer I Turned Pretty, It’s Not Summer Without You and We’ll Always Have Summer. After following Belly’s (Lola Tung) individual relationships with siblings Conrad (Chris Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), Wednesday’s series finale showed her choosing the eldest Fisher brother.

Pulling inspiration from We’ll Always Have Summer, the show ended with Belly and Conrad returning to Cousins Beach as a couple. Some fans, however, weren’t thrilled by the lack of epilogue, which showed Belly and Conrad getting married. It also left most of the characters separate from Belly and Conrad.

“The Summer I Turned Pretty’ has struck a chord with audiences everywhere, creating moments of joy, nostalgia, and connection that have made it a global sensation,” Courtenay Valenti, who is head of film, streaming and theatrical at Amazon MGM Studios, and Vernon Sanders, who is Global Head of Television, at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, shared on Wednesday. “We’re proud of the series’ extraordinary success and couldn’t be more excited to partner again with Jenny Han to bring fans an unforgettable next chapter.”

Sanders previously hinted at plans for The Summer I Turned Pretty to grow beyond the events in the books.

“I will say stay tuned, but Jenny’s got some exciting surprises. So we’re thrilled about a season 3, and she’s got a vision for more,” he told Deadline in September 2023. “This show is going to continue to be a huge centerpiece for us, and we absolutely have plans to continue building it. Jenny’s got great vision for where she wants to go with all of it, but we’re already hard at work developing complementary pieces.”

More recently, however, Sanders shut down the idea of a possible TSITP spinoff.

“That was probably wishful thinking for me at the time, and Jenny has stayed really focused [on] getting these seasons right,” he shared with Deadline in July. “We’re pursuing new and different things with Jenny right now. She’s presented some other things that are related to this.”

Sanders noted that he hoped to continue to collaborate with Han again.

“So once the full season is launched, we’ll get into conversations, and we’ll ask her to pick from the many things that she’s surfaced,” he added. “But we’ve moved away from those conversations.”

The Summer I Turned Pretty is streaming on Prime Video.
