Sheriff Country left Mickey and Boone’s romantic future up in the air — but does that mean all hope is lost going into season 2?
During the season 1 finale on Friday, May 22, Mickey’s (Morena Baccarin) feelings for Boone (Matt Lauria) appeared to be more clear — to her — after he got shot in the line of duty. Boone, however, wasn’t aware that Mickey was starting to figure out how she felt … and he appeared to move on right in front of her.
“You’re asking me questions that are so far above my pay grade,” Lauria quipped exclusively to Us Weekly about the chances of Mickey and Boone exploring their connection in season 2. “The emotional proximity and the trust [between them] is everything. That is what burns so much toward the end of the season.”
Showrunner Matt Lopez, meanwhile, broke down where Mickey’s head is at the end of the season.
“There’s just this intimacy that gets forged, and obviously Mickey and Boone get tested in the beginning of season 1, but they have this bedrock of friendship,” he explained. “It’s clear [in the finale] that it’s not the one-way street [in terms of feelings]. Mickey has to be asking herself, ‘Did I walk past a diamond to pick up a piece of coal?’”
He continued: “It’s complicated in the best of ways but that tension and what to do next about it will continue into season 2. There’s the character of the medical examiner, who Boone has a great chemistry with. Did Mickey perhaps miss her opportunity? Was there a door opened for a split second and is it now closed? That’s all stuff we’re gonna play around with in season 2.”
Lopez remained coy about this being a slow-burn romance in it for the long haul, telling Us, “People send me these posts on Reddit and stuff, and even the fans who want them to get together are like, ‘But I hope it doesn’t happen too soon.’”
Lauria, for his part, is excited for whatever comes next for Boone.
“Boone is embracing Edgewater for all that it is,” he noted. “That’s been the central journey for Boone, and I think that’s also what allowed him to really explore internally and confront his feelings for Mickey. Because normally, that would be a hard line for him not to cross.”
He continued: “But then there’s a more human side to all of this. It matters because he’d seen Mickey time and time again take a human approach with people and have it bear fruit. That contributed in large part to Boone confronting his feelings about Mickey — only to get shot down.”
Lauria is holding out hope that the audience will learn even more about Boone in season 2, saying, “He kept a lot of things close to the vest — including a secret wife. I’d love to get into more about who this dude is.”
