A Virginia family said they were left covered in “itchy welts, lesions and rashes” after taking an international flight operated by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines that was allegedly “infested” with bed bugs, according to a new lawsuit.

Romulo Albuquerque and his wife sued both KLM and air travel partner Delta Air Lines last week, alleging they and their two kids caught the nasty, hard-to-get-rid-of bugs on a KLM flight they had purchased tickets for through Delta.

The family of four said they suffered bites while on the international flight to Serbia on March 21.

The Albuquerques booked a Delta flight out of Roanoke, Va. and caught a connecting KLM flight in Atlanta that made a stop in Amsterdam before cruising to their final destination in Belgrade, Serbia, according to the complaint filed on Thursday.

Both flights were operated by KLM, and the family used Delta’s SkyMiles program to purchase their seats, the lawsuit says.

Roughly two hours into their connecting flight to Amsterdam, Albuquerque’s wife “began feeling like bugs were crawling on her and that she was being bitten,” the suit stated.

“It was at this point that she realized that bugs were crawling on her light-colored sweater,” the complaint said.

The couple “immediately alerted the flight attendants,” who in turn “urged them to keep their voices down to avoid a ‘panic’ on the airplane,” the suit alleged.

Albuquerque took photos and recorded videos of the bugs crawling on his wife’s sweater and even hiding “in the creases” of their seats. The photos, included in the complaint, showed small, bloodied mites squished on a KLM drink napkin.

Other photos showed each of the four travelers with red, irritated dots scattered along their arms, legs, and torsos, according to the complaint.

The prominent bites that marred their skin “ruined their family vacation and has caused humiliation, embarrassment, anxiety, discomfort, inconvenience, medical expenses, and loss of clothing and personal items,” the lawsuit claimed.

The family is seeking compensatory damages against both airlines in the amount of at least $200,000.

The Post reached out to Delta and KLM for comment.

In a statement to PEOPLE magazine, Delta said “the allegations at issue relate to flights not operated by Delta Air Lines” and is reviewing the complaint.

KLM told The Independent that the company was “unable to comment on the specific allegations at this time” but would address the complaint through “the appropriate legal channels.”
