There’s something irresistible about a celebrity homes tour. You come to Los Angeles, hop on a bus and get a peek at how the stars live. Or at least that’s the idea.
We paid $50 to find out whether the classic Hollywood tour was worth it. After our driver introduced himself, we wound our way through the Hollywood Hills and onto Mulholland Drive, ready to see how the other half lives.
Our guide had plenty of names for us: Drew Carey, Quentin Tarantino, Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, Beyoncé and Jay-Z. There were also plenty of trees, fences, retaining walls and rooftops.
At one point, he indicated Drew Carey’s place, noting a tarp on the roof. A car was there, too. “He’s home,” our guide concluded.
The names kept coming. In one stretch, he rattled off a list of stars associated with mansions in the distance: Mark Wahlberg, Denzel Washington, Eddie Murphy, Samuel L. Jackson, Magic Johnson, Rod Stewart and Sylvester Stallone, among others. Exactly which house belonged to whom was a little harder to make out from the moving bus.
Our guide delivered it all with a wonderfully matter-of-fact style. He even told us he’d been trying to convince Al Pacino to get on the bus.
The tour ended and we headed back toward Hollywood Boulevard in traffic. We’d heard a lot of famous names and seen a lot of very well-protected properties. As for the stars themselves, we had better luck on the sidewalk.
If you want a guaranteed celebrity sighting in Hollywood, there’s always the Walk of Fame.
