Four years after Britney Spears threatened to sue her family over her conservatorship, Us Weekly has new insight into where the Princess of Pop stands with her parents and siblings.
Britney, 43, famously called out her “whole family” during an open court hearing in June 2021 for not doing “a goddamn thing” to help her break free from the control of her estranged father, Jamie Spears, who placed her under the controversial legal arrangement in February 2008 after she suffered a public breakdown.
“I just want my life back,” Britney told a Los Angeles judge at the time. “It’s been 13 years, and it’s enough. It’s been a long time since I’ve owned my money, and it’s my wish and my dream for all of this to end.”
Britney argued that she “shouldn’t be in a conservatorship” because, unlike other conservatees, who are typically elderly or incapacitated, she was able to “work and provide” for other people, including Jamie. (Throughout her conservatorship, Britney released four albums, embarked on multiple tours and headlined a Las Vegas residency that grossed $137.7 million.)
“My dad and anyone involved in this conservatorship … they should be in jail,” she said.
The judge presiding over the case suspended Jamie, 73, as Britney’s conservator in September 2021 before terminating the guardianship altogether that November.
Since then, Britney’s relationship with her family has been rocky. She has been spotted with her mother, Lynne Spears, and her brother, Bryan Spears, on occasion but has not reunited with her father or her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears.
Now, sources exclusively tell Us about the Spears family’s current status.
Jamie Spears
One source says Britney’s “relationship with her dad is nonexistent,” adding, “There’s no chance of reconciliation.”
A second insider confirms, “There’s zero communication on either side, and that’s how she likes it. Furious doesn’t even begin to cover how she feels about him and what he did to her. She’ll never forgive him. He’s accepted it and lives a very quiet life now. With the conservatorship over, the only stress in his life now is his health.”
However, a third source insists Britney still “loves her dad,” saying she even “offered to pay for his healthcare and find the best doctors” when he had his leg amputated in late 2023 due to a bad infection.
Lynne Spears
The first source shares that things are still “complicated” between Britney and her 70-year-old mom: “Their relationship is very fragile. [Lynne] reaches out to Britney for the most part. They talk and text every few weeks. [There are] no plans for [her] mom to visit anytime soon.”
The second insider concurs, “[Britney] and her mom still have highs and lows. One day they’re working on their relationship, the next they won’t speak for weeks. Lynne tries to treat the situation with as much care as possible, but she also doesn’t want to sit back and do nothing. She’d love more than anything to be close with Britney again. They used to be best friends. Lynne understands Britney is still hurt and traumatized by the conservatorship, but she hopes one day they can focus on the future and not the past.”
The third source adds that Britney “knows her mom is a great woman and loves her dearly.”
Jamie Lynn Spears
The sisters have made some progress since their public 2022 feud over the 34-year-old Zoey 101 alum’s memoir, Things I Should Have Said. (Britney released her own book, The Woman in Me, the following year.)
“Britney and Jamie Lynn are doing better, and they’re planning on getting together soon,” the first source reveals. “The girls decided to keep their relationship problems out of the public eye. They FaceTime every few weeks, and Jamie Lynn is planning on visiting Britney next month in L.A.”
Another insider says, “They really love one another, but they can be hardheaded siblings.”
Bryan Spears
Britney has remained the closest to her brother, who moved in with the singer shortly after her ex-husband Sam Asghari filed for divorce in August 2023. Britney and Bryan, 48, have also gone on multiple vacations together over the past year.
“Britney and Bryan are still close,” the first source says. “He stays out of her issues with the rest of the family.”
