Katey Sagal is opening up about her path to parenthood.

“I had a child at 52 through a surrogate, but I became a mother again at 52,” Sagal, now 73, said on the Wednesday, August 5, episode of the “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast. “My husband is six years younger than I am, and this is my third husband. When we met, he was like, ‘I don’t want to have any kids.’ I was like, ‘OK ‘cause I have about five minutes left if you want to have kids.’”

Sagal married Kurt Sutter in 2004, three years before they welcomed daughter Esmé, now 19. The actress also shares daughter Sarah, 31, and son Jackson, 30, with ex-husband Jack White.

Despite Sutter’s hesitation, he ultimately had a change of heart after “really talking about it” with Sagal.

While some celebrities get started growing their families early on, these stars waited to have children until later in life. Alanis Morissette, for example, announced in March 2019 that she was expecting her third child at age 44. The “Ironic” singer, who married rapper Mario “Souleye” Treadway in 2010, posted a baby bump pic to […]

“We did the surrogate process and that’s what happened,” she told podcast host Ted Danson. “We continue to live life, we don’t just fold up and die.”

Sagal has now watched her eldest children follow in her Hollywood footsteps.

“My older kids are both musicians and actors, and my oldest daughter has made the most beautiful record that she wrote and produced and she’s amazing,” she gushed of Sarah. “And just to see the process of how you have to be able to market yourself now, like, where you’d have to pay [labels] back, but they’d give you money, so that you could just be an artist and they do all the selling.”

She continued, “Now, it’s just a very different world for young artists. It’s hard. I mean, on the acting side, too.”

Sagal’s son, Jackson, for his part, is best known for his starring role on Hulu’s Tell Me Lies.

“He’s doing quite well as an actor,” Sagal added on Wednesday. “He’s in Australia right now making a movie, but he’s on a television show called Tell Me Lies on Hulu. They just finished their third season, so he just kind of blew up. My sweet son.”

When Jackson, Sarah and Esmé aren’t traveling for various work or school commitments, they live near Sagal in Los Angeles.

“My daughter lives, you know, 10 minutes from me and my youngest one is 19, and she’s home from college,” she said. “I get to nose my way in [to their careers]. What I’ve really learned lately is to say things like, ‘I have some thoughts about that. Would you like to hear it?’ Then, if they say, ;No, mom, I don’t want to hear it.’ I have to follow suit, but I’m not a pushy stage mom, but I relate to their art.”
